STEAM: CODERS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring underrepresented and underserved students and families through the fundamentals of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM).  Our mission is to unlock the potential of each participant through an innovative and enjoyable curriculum focused on critical thinking, access to opportunities, and attainable pathways to academic and career success.

Our History
STEAM:CODERS, based in Pasadena, CA, to meet the demands of students who are interested in STEAM. After hosting a series of one-day workshops and receiving positive feedback from parents and students, it was determined that there are limited resources and opportunities for students to learn more about STEAM. Due to the increasing importance of computer science (i.e., coding) and the growth of educational and career opportunities in STEAM, it is crucial that students get on the computer science and math track, early in their academic tenures.

  • Over 1200 students served, since inception (July 2014)
  • Classes in Altadena, Claremont, Inglewood, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Pasadena and  Pomona
  • Tours: Google LA (Venice, CA) and NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Pasadena, CA)
  • Partnerships;
    • Apple, Art Center College of Design, Black Data Processing Associates - LA, CodeSpark, Community Partners, Harvey Mudd College, Idealab, Innovate Pasadena, La Salle High School, Long Beach Unified School District, Pasadena City College, University of La Verne and USC Rossier School of Education

Our Impact:
STEAM:CODERS has introduced over twelve hundred new K-12 students to STEAM, specifically, computer science and robotics. These fields represent a tremendous number of academic and career opportunities. Interest in STEAM:CODERS has resulted in requests to add more sites, in order to accommodate demand. In addition, more courses will be added to incorporate all of the STEAM elements into the curriculum (i.e., art + design). Southern California is a very diverse and culturally rich environment for STEAM education. The combination of hands-on activities, field trips and classroom instruction will spur imagination and innovation and help the students develop an appreciation for STEAM. Opportunity + Imagination = Innovation.  Full STEAM Ahead!
